Chris Garrett, CEO

On 10 Jan, 2018

Chris brings over 40 years of industry experience from mud logging, reservoir analysis, exploration, and development ending up with oil and gas production beginning at over twenty thousand barrels of oil per day and growing consistently.  Chris graduated from Exeter University with an Honors degree in Geology and Geography and a Master’s degree in Oceanography from Southampton University. He is also a Fellow of The Geological Society and an AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist.

His experience is spread across the globe beginning with Core Laboratories in Saudi Arabia before being reassigned at the headquarters in Dallas, Texas.  He spent 8 years in the USA performing reserve evaluations and geological modeling studies while liaising with clients throughout the Lower 48 and Alaska.  He returned to London in 1988 and moved to Western Geophysical in the seismic interpretation department heading projects mainly in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. In the 1990’s, Chris became the General Manager for geological studies in Russia (CIS) for Petro Alliance (Western Atlas joint venture). Chris subsequently worked for Baker Hughes and Randall & Dewey in a number of roles including managing wellsite operations at the Abana and Ima fields in Nigeria.

Chris joined Gulf Keystone as Managing Director of the UK subsidiary and Vice President of Operations for Algeria and Kurdistan, Iraq.  Chris managed the technical Geology, Geophysics & Engineering teams and ran field operations in both Algeria and Kurdistan where GKP was the Operator of exploration and production licenses. At various times he was Chairman of Partner Operating Committees and Vice Chairman of the KRG/Operator Management Committee.  As Managing Director and Vice President Mr. Garrett grew the company from a staff of 3 to over 150 employees, he evaluated the geology, plotted the location and drilled the first exploration well, discovering, more than 1 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Within a 5 year period, during Chris’ tenure, the Shaikan discovery progressed from being a single well to an oilfield producing in excess of 20,000 barrels of oil per day.  The challenges of growing Gulf Keystone in Kurdistan from a startup company to a viable production company with limited service company support while ensuring the security of operations was a milestone in itself.

Chris’s leadership and management style, attention to detail, and experience in taking startup companies into difficult and challenging regions of the world where little or no infrastructure exist, while developing a world class operations is a credit to his drive and resilience.
